The significance of lord Natraja in hindu culture is said to be that the lord Shiva is shown as a source of all movement within the cosmos, represented by the arch of flame.
The gestures of the dance represents Shiva's five activities, creation(symbolized by the hand drum), protection (by the fear not hand gesture), destruction (by the fire ), embodiment (by the foot planted on the earth),and the release ( by the foot held afloat)
As a Indian Classical Bharatnatyam Dancer myself, I think the symbolism of Natraja is religion, art and science merged as one. In Nataraja's endless dance of creation, preservation, destruction and again creation ,is hidden a deep understanding of our universe.
