Jemmy Button Story
Acrylic on Canvas

I was inspired by the Jemmy Button story where a little kid called Jemmy was traded for a pearl button. He was shipped to Britain from South America away from his home and everyone he knew. My painting shows the sky and the sea when he crossed the Atlantic border. He was scared as he was in one tiny boat in the ocean. I painted this to show his sadness, loneliness and melancholic feelings. Stars are a strong theme throughout the book and symbolise hope for Jemmy.
