You're Having A Laugh
Charcoal/black and white pastel pencil
My aim is to stop people in their tracks, to be unable to pass by without thinking about the emotion in my portraits. What does it make them feel, does it resonate with a current or previous experience? Can they relate to it? The use of charcoal, pastel and white chalk allows me to capture a feeling of emotion, and to make people consider what the subject of my portraits may be contemplating. I have taken inspiration from the dark backgrounds in 16th and 17th century portraits – I admire how the artists have projected their subject forwards and aim to achieve a similar effect.
