Shannon Charlesworth

Barnsley

Shannon Charlesworth

This piece was made in response to the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill of 2021. Charlesworth’s practice is an exploration of protest through the lens of language. Through the practice of knitting, she aims to give a sense of permanence to words and phrases sourced from global affairs and the protests that occur in response. Traditionally at protests, words are written on to flimsy and short-lived materials such as cardboard and paper. Through the use of knit, she is able to give the words a sense durability as she physically weaves the letters together, permanently interlocking the text. Charlesworth aims to create
a conversation through the value of community and the coming together of individuals witnessed in protest and the craft. Decontextualising references allows for an audience to freely divulge into what the words and phrases mean to themselves and in the context of both past and present political dynamics.
