Bridge of Sighs at St Johns, Cambridge
Oil on canvas
Flat planes of tone and colour were a feature of this painting, dividing up the picture plane. A block of sunlit lemon verge leads in to the composition. From here in the Lower River Court I liked the way that the bridge sprang Gothically dark over the river Cam, to abut the colour-rich riverside building of the Third Court, itself in full sun and strongly reflected in the river.
