This weeks Featured Artist... IMOGEN PERKIN

IMOGEN PERKIN

I am an artist living in Hertfordshire and I paint using oils on canvas. Although I prefer to paint to a larger scale, I often make paintings to a more domestic size, for reasons of practicality.

Describe yourself in 5 sentences... " 1. I like plants and gardening and I'm a member of the Cottage Garden Soc.

2. I've a wealth of seeds from this source to plant out in the spring.

3. Another interest is photography, though I don't have the technical know-how to be competent.

4. I love drama and narrative.

5. My weaknesses are detective novels and crosswords."

Why do you create art? " It's enjoyable and seems meaningful. "

What has been the highlight of your career so far? " It was very nice to receive the Summer Exhibition Prize from D31 Gallery. "

What does your dream studio look like? "I don't have a studio and I've never wanted one. "

Where would you like your art to take you? "It would be nice if people were to recognise my style. I'd like it to be on something that is widely available, like a book jacket."

Does art always have to have a deeper meaning?

"Concept is important, as are intent and origin. It is these that forge the link between artist and viewer through the medium of the piece.

I also think that as people we naturally seek for meanings."

Who/what inspires you? Why?

"Berthe Morisot and Atkinson Grimshaw are among many heroes. Morisot for her vivacity and verve in describing domestic subjects, and Grimshaw for his mastery of dark, mysterious atomosphere."

How would you like to be remembered? "It would be nice if the work I have sold remains treasured in the family, and not touted on ebay." What would you say to your younger self? ""Hey, take this crystal ball ...""
